Assam is a state with a lot of oil and gas reserves. A number of oil and gas wells are found in the state’s biodiversity-rich areas. A blowout occurred in a gas well of government-run Oil India Limited (OIL) located at Bhaghjan in Assam’s Tinsukia district on May 27, 2020.
The peoples who saw the fire at first time, they thought this is the natures “Miracle”, but after that they all get to know this is the gas licking.
Around 650 families, and 2,500 people, were initially evacuated from nearby areas and shifted to relief camps. There are two bodies recovered from the area after massive fire engulfed a gas well owned by Oil India LTD.
Oil India say it will take at least 4 weeks to put off the fire. Also there are Two Oil India employees are suspended for alleged negligence.
There are violent protests around the well site. Request was made to Chief Secretary, Govt. of Assam and District Administration, Tinsukia for maintaining law and order so that the experts are allowed to enter the site and start the well control operations. All officials of OIL / ONGC are being evacuated from nearby areas. Once the situation is normal, the experts from ALERT and the staff of OIL / ONGC will move to the site.
The chief minister has already directed to deploy fire & emergency services, army and police officials at the site to control the situation. The chief minister also directed district admin to ensure safety of people and appealed to local people to not panic.
Oil India LTD. Also issued a statement saying that the well, caught fire around 1.15 PM on June 9th 2020. Compensation is being given to the families of the two employees who lost their lives. Also 4 people sustained minor injuries and there are experts from Singapore and ONGC who are assessing the situation.
